The Division of Intensive Care Medicine is a specialized and educational unit of the Department of Anesthesiology, Reanimatology and Intensive Care Medicine of the University of Zagreb School of Dental Medicine. It has a capacity of 14 patient beds equipped with the most modern systems for mechanical ventilation and monitoring of vital parameters. The care of patients is provided by anesthesiologists, intensive care subspecialists (including one university professor, one assistant professor, four doctors with a PhD, four doctors with the title of primarius), and nurses with secondary and higher education.

The Division treats approximately 1,300 of the most complex critically ill patients annually. Patients from all surgical specialties are admitted to the department – abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, maxillofacial and oral surgery and otorhinolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, neurosurgery, as well as traumatology and orthopedics. Additionally, severely polytraumatized, septic, and severe COVID patients are treated.

Our treatment is based on the latest medical knowledge with a multidisciplinary approach and the use of the most modern medical equipment. Patients are treated using advanced hemodynamic monitoring, respiratory monitoring, mechanical ventilatory support, bedside ultrasound (point of care), and continuous hemodialysis (CVVHDF). Patients also receive physical therapy as part of their postoperative treatment.

Clinical examinations are carried out to confirm brain death, after which organ and tissue removal takes place.

The practical part of residency in anesthesiology, reanimatology, and intensive care medicine, as well as subspecialization in intensive care medicine, including the education of residents from other institutions, and various scientific projects and research are carried out.

The Division’s staff are members of relevant scientific and professional societies (HDIM, ESICM, ESAIC) and are invited to speak at national and international conferences.
