The Department of Surgery is the teaching base of the University of Zagreb School of Medicine, the Catholic University of Croatia, the Libertas International Universit, the University North, the University of Applied Health Science, and the Bjelovar University of Applied Sciences. The Division of Abdominal Surgery with four units and a Day Surgery, the Division of Orthopedics and Traumatology with three units and a Day Surgery, the Division of Vascular and General Surgery with two units and a Day Surgery and the Division of Thoracic Surgery operate within the Department of Surgery.
With around 5,500 hospitalized patients and more than 5,000 operations per year, the Department of Surgery offers medical care at the highest level. The Department employs 49 doctors and 122 nurses/technicians who use their knowledge and skills to  care for and treat even the most complex surgical patients.
At the Department, undergraduate classes are held for students of the School of Medicine Surgery and Surgical Propedeutics, as well as several elective courses in narrow specialist fields. As part of the postgraduate studiy Biomedicine and Health Sciences, several courses are offered, which are led by the Department’s lecturers. The Department is also a place for professional training of residents from other parts of Croatia and foreign students. Practical classes for secondary school students are also heldl. The activities of nurses of the Department of Surgery are integrated into multidisciplinary teamwork.
The doctors of our Department actively participate in national and international congresses every year in order to be able to apply the latest achievements and findings in the field of surgery in the future. In this way, the quality of treatment is significantly improved, which is our ultimate goal.
