The Department of Transfusion Medicine provides services of pre-transfusion testing for outpatient patients, as well as for all departments within the Dubrava University Hospital (DUH).

Catalog of tests:

  • Blood group determination
  • Detection of anti-erythrocyte antibodies
  • Determination of the specificity of anti-erythrocyte antibodies
  • Direct antiglobulin test
  • Determination of erythrocyte antigens

We also supply the entire hospital with blood products and plasma-derived medicines around the clock. Since the end of 2018, the Committee of Transfusion Medicine has been working under the leadership of Gorana Džepina, MD, a specialist in transfusion medicine, and meets regularly to analyze transfusion treatment and the consumption of blood products, and to make suggestions for improvement.

An important aspect of our work is the collection of haematopoietic stem cells for autologous transplantation. The new Spectra Optia cell separator has been in use since 2018. Since the first leukapheresis on June 13, 2007, cells for 371 patients have been collected and stored. The highest number of leukaphereses in one year was 99 in 2023, and even during the pandemic in 2020, 22 leukaphereses were performed. In 2019, a new sophisticated analyzer system for pre-transfusion testing, Flexis, was introduced, and in 2020 the IH-500 analyzer system for pre-transfusion testing was introduced. At the end of 2020, we started using Covid convalescent plasma.
